The most feared snake in Africa. It is a large snake but any dark snake in Africa is always considered a black mamba, even if it is less than 20cm long. Over six years, I only saw four, two of which had been killed by cars.
The one on the picture was spotted in Lake Manyara National Park, Tanzania. We were watching elephants eating by the side of the road when this large mamba (around 2.5 metres long) crossed the track in front of us. I grabbed my 500mm lens and managed to take 3 shots before the snake disappeared in the grass.
