The female Longimanus came quite close on a few occasions, although not aggressively. Longimanus means long hands. Cousteau used to really fear these sharks as they can be really bold and curious. On that dive, they kept a respectful distance from us, but kept circling. This female shows why these magnificent animals are so hard to see now. They are being fished to extinction either as a by-product or for the shark fin industry. This hook will eventually fall off but the shark will keep it for a little while.
Cette femelle Longimane est passé plusieurs fois très près de nous, tout en étant non aggressive. Longimane veut dire “longues mains”. Cousteau avait peur de ces requins qui peuvent être très curieux. Pendant cette plongée, les requins sont restés à une distance respectueuse tout en continuant à tourner autour de nous. Cette femelle montre pourquoi il est desormais si difficile de plonger avec eux. Ils sont pêchés jusqu’à l’extinction, soit pour leurs ailerons, soit par erreur. L’hameçon finira par rouiller et tomber mais le requin le gardera pendant quelque temps.
