I love kingfishers. The pied kingfisher is probably the least colourful but it is very common and usually very active, which makes it a good subject to take pictures. I was on a boat ride on the Shire river in Malawi, and McLoud, my guide and friend, cut off the engine as we glided towards the kingfisher sitting on a branch. The bird stayed there and I managed to take the picture with just blue sky as a background.
