Lions' Next Meal

I took this picture in the Nsefu Sector of South Luangwa National Park, Zambia. It is an area seldom visited by the guides as it is far from the lodges and to get to the interesting places of the area, you have to drive through very open ground where tourists can see very little. I have been there a few times and that day was absolutely incredible. In the middle of that section of the park, there are hot springs and open plains surrounded by low bush. We found the lions lying in the shade of a bush just at the edge of the plains. We spent about 2 hours next to them watching the spectacle in front of us. In the plain, we saw elephants, elands, about 200 crowned cranes, zebras, impalas, warthogs and a huge herd of about 800 buffaloes. The lions were watching them with intent but it was close to midday and a lot too hot for them to hunt.
